Carmel Higgins, author of Cosmic Fire/Local Sparks

Carmel Higgins was born in Campbellton, on the North shore of the province of New Brunswick and grew up in Coal Branch Kent County. Her  parents were of French Acadian descent. Born during the Great Depression, her life to the present has at times taken interesting turns.

Carmel was raised in the Roman Catholic tradition. After her husband, Paul, died in 1993, she took up writing as a therapeutic exercise and as part of her quest for meaning. Her experience of grief and quest for new life eventually led her to the Sophia Center at Holy Names College in Oakland California, where she studied what is being hailed as the new cosmology and Earth literacy. Her book is about her life-long journey into that venture.

Cosmic Fire/Local Sparks is an autobiography of sorts, but one that uses significant events and life experiences to enhance a greater story still: The Universe Story. As such, the book is not so much about Carmel Higgins, the indivicual, as it is about the power of story to connect us with each other and with Earth and the cosmos. Carmel's hope is that it will help others on a similar journey from traditional roots to an expanded worldview of deeper faith and understanding.

A retired homemaker, Carmel now resides in Moncton, New Brunswick, near her five boys and nine grandchildren.
